Life in Landscapes: archaeologists and landscape heritage for our times
Professor Sam Turner
Professor of Archaeology, Newcastle University
Archaeologists at Newcastle University have worked on landscapes for over 70 years, from Hadrian’s Wall to the Libyan desert, and from the volcanoes of Mexico to the mountains of Hong Kong. As well as pioneering archaeological theory and methods, they have helped to shaped the discipline’s development and its active role in society by collaborating with community groups and agencies.

Over the last 50 years archaeologists have increasingly understood the ubiquity of landscape heritage, its value to society and its potential to help shape landscapes of the future. By chance, this week marks the retirement of one of Newcastle’s most influential landscape archaeologists, Graham Fairclough. The lecture will include a case-study of his work, beginning with landscapes of the North East in the 1970s, which has shaped our understanding of landscape heritage in Britain and internationally.
