Library Membership

The Lit & Phil is entirely independent and is funded by its membership. It is free to come into the building and look around, browse the books and buy a tea or coffee, but there is so much more to enjoy if you become  a member:

  • Borrow from over 200,000 books and CDs (depending on category of membership)
  • Free access to the Naxos Spoken Word Library (all members excluding Friends)
  • Free access to the Naxos Music Library (Gramophone library members only)

  • Friends membership for those who want to support the library but do not  want or need borrowing rights - £70

( would cost £174 a year to subscribe directly to either of the Naxos services, so library membership is extremely good value!)

Please note that when it is  possible to do so, you will need to come into the library to activate your membership, as you need to bring proof of address (and proof of age/student status depending on the type of membership). For the moment, however, if you join and would like to access the Naxos streaming services (dependent on your kind of membership) we can do that by email.

Postal Membership:

Do you live too far away to visit us? Why not become a postal member? Join in any of the categories above and pay the postage on the books you borrow. This facility will be available once the library opens again after this period of temporary closure.

To join any of the above categories simply select your membership option in the box and add to basket then you may complete your membership.

Many people like to spread the cost of membership over a year with Direct Debit. If you would like to follow that option, then please download our Direct Debit form, complete it and return to the address on the form. The form is downloadable by clicking here.
