The Lit & Phil is an independent library and is funded by its membership. Anyone may visit and look around, but there is so much more to enjoy if you become a member:

DIRECT DEBIT
You can also spread out the cost of membership using a Direct Debit form. This means you can break up your annual fee into an annual or 10-monthly payment. For example, if you joined as an Society member and filled in the direct debit form, you would pay £19 per month for 10 months. If you would like to join using this method you can pick up a form in the library, or you can download the form, complete it and return to the address on the form. We have two Direct Debit forms depending on membership types:
MEMBERS DIRECT DEBIT FORM and FRIENDS or DONORS DIRECT DEBIT FORM
LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP
- Society membership – up to 12 books at any one time – £190
- Society + Additional Household – up to 24 books at any one time – £205
- Under 30 – up to 12 books at any one time – £80
- Society junior – up to 12 books at any one time – £15
- Music – up to 5 CDs + 6 music books at any one time – £10
- Society + Music – up to 12 books + 5 CDs + 6 music books at any one time – £200
- Society + Additional Household + Music – up to 24 books + 5 CDs + 6 music books at any one time – £215
- Under 30 + Music – up to 12 books + 5 CDs + 6 music books at any one time – £90
- Society Junior + Music – up to 12 books + 5 CDs + 6 music books at any one time – £25
Friends of the Lit & Phil
Suggested payment | £60 | £120 | £180
Friends of the Lit & Phil are supporters who make regular monthly or annual payments by direct debit and join our mailing list. Donations about £5 per month enjoy priority booking for events. Friend donations are taken monthly (12 months rather that 10 months like membership direct debits) and continue until you stop.
Once you have bought your membership online the library staff will get in touch to let you know the next steps. If you are a Junior or Under 30 member you will need to bring in any proof of ID necessary for the membership category on your first visit.

Do you live too far away to visit us? Why not become a postal member? Join in any of the categories above and pay the postage on the books you borrow.
