Book Donation Policy

Due to pressures on space, we are not accepting many book donations at this time. However, you can certainly inquire if you have specific items you'd like us to consider adding to the collection. Before you do, please read our donations policy below and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Book sponsorship

The Sponsored Book Scheme was set up in 2001 to give members and other interested parties the chance to assist the library in its conservation efforts. Over one hundred books have benefited from the scheme so far.

Although the Lit & Phil has been fortunate in obtaining Lottery funding for certain binding projects, and we do have a small budget allocated to essential repairs, we are very grateful for any additional help.

If you would like to help preserve our collection, please take part in this scheme. You may choose a particular book or subject area, or leave the choice to the Library’s discretion. Books may be sponsored by individual members, on behalf of other people, as gifts or in memoriam.

Contributions of £15 or more will be marked with a special bookplate inserted in your chosen work, which will remain there for the life of the book. If you would like to sponsor a book as a gift for someone else, their name will be inscribed on the bookplate and they will receive a certificate from the Library.

Any other donations are also welcome. These will be used solely to support the valuable work of our bookbinding team.

If you would like to support the fund, please either call the library or contact us via the button below.

Book fund

In 2005 we established the Lit & Phil Book Fund, which allows members to contribute monthly to our central book fund.

Members specify how much they would like to donate and if they would like books to be bought within a certain category.

We would like to thank all members who have taken part to date.

Please contact us by phone or via the button below if you would like to take part.

Legacies

Legacies have been a valuable source of income for the society for many years.

We have used money to rebind part of the collection and to refurbish parts of the premises.

We are asking all our members to consider remembering the Society in their wills.

Because the Society is a registered charity, gifts of this type are exempt from Inheritance Tax.

If you leave a legacy, you can decide exactly how it should be spent, or if you prefer, you can leave that decision to the Trustees of The Lit & Phil.
