L’Inferno

The 1911 film with a new soundtrack by Edison Studio

£12
Doors open at 7:30pm

L'Inferno is a 1911 Italian silent film, loosely adapted from Inferno, the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. L'Inferno took over three years to make, and was the first full-length Italian feature film. An international success, it grossed more than $2 million in the United States alone. This version has English intertitles, and a stunning new electro-acoustic score by  Edison Studio who have kindly given us permission for this first UK screening with their soundtrack.

The film shows how Virgil leads Dante through the nine circles of hell in a series of spectacular scenes, with striking visual effects, multiple sets, and a huge cast of extras. The imagery is strongly based on Gustav Doré's illustrations and suitably Bosch-like in its grotesquerie, and really quite amazing: the tinting and toning of the film highlights the fantastic, unreal scenes. See Dante tormented by demons; see the wrathful and sullen sloths dipped in mud and beat each other; see Count Ugolino eat his sons; see the panderers and seducers lashed by devils with great whips; see Lucifer eating Judas. Certainly not for the faint hearted. Be prepared to be amazed!

Edison Studio is an Italian collective of composers founded in 1993 in Rome with the aim of combining personal creative and productive skills for the creation of musical works in relation to the visual arts and through live performance. Their hugely atmospheric soundtrack to L’Inferno adds immeasurably to the experience.

Please note: this is a powerful film with strong imagery and not suitable for small children.
