The Santa Saga | Gail-Nina Anderson Lecture
Events List

Wednesday 18th December | 6pm
A talk by Gail-Nina Anderson
The jovial personification of the festive season, Father Christmas seems to be written into our expectations of what Yuletide is all about: the fur-trimmed red costume, the white beard, the sleigh, reindeer and (most of all) the gifts. The history of this familiar figure, however, is woven together from many different strands, cultures and myths. This illustrated talk will follow these threads to discover how folklore, religion, poetry, advertising, publishing, popular culture and two civil wars have all contributed to creating our familiar image of Santra Claus/ Father Christmas.
