The Armstrongs and the Lit & Phil: a century of progress
Presented by Henrietta Heald
For the entire 19th century, there was an Armstrong at the heart of the Lit & Phil. The connection began in 1794, after a young man from an artisan family in Cumbria crossed the Pennines to find a job in the booming coal town of Newcastle. It ended in December 1900, with the death of William Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Cragside, president of the society for 40 years and one of its great benefactors.

Henrietta Heald recounts the story of the Lit & Phil during this momentous period through the prism of the Armstrong family and their achievements. She is the author of Magician of the North, the acclaimed biography of Lord Armstrong, and Magnificent Women and Their Revolutionary Machines, a centenary history of the Women’s Engineering Society.
