Talk 1: Importance of geology for energy supply and security
Earth’s geology has been, and continues to be, the source of finite resources that have underpinned global development. First, coal, then oil and gas, spurred industrialization and the availability of energy. However, this has come at a cost. Climate change. There is now a pressing need to decarbonize our energy systems, globally, to support reaching net zero. This requires the decarbonization of electricity, heating, and cooling; all scenarios will likely include using the geology deep beneath the surface for energy extraction and storage, as well as sequestration of carbon dioxide. In this talk, we will explore how the Earth’s geological resources will be invaluable to support energy supply and security in a sustainable future.
