SOPHIE SPEED WITH THE DEAN STOCKDALE TRIO

Saxophonist Sophie Speed first came to prominence as a member of the Tyne Valley Youth Big Band, later moving into the senior ranks of the Tyne Valley Big Band. At Sage Gateshead, Sophie was a member of James Birkett’s youth ensemble, JB’s Cats and Jambone. In 2023 Sophie graduated from Leeds Conservatoire. Leading her own quartet and sextet (featuring rising star trumpeter Olivia Cuttill), Sophie has appeared at jazz clubs across the north of England.

A continuing association with NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) afforded Sophie the opportunity to appear at Ronnie Scott’s, London with the NYJO Latin Collective and to perform to a 1700-strong audience in Dortmund (the concert was broadcast on German national radio). Inspired by tenor saxophonists Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley and others, Sophie has worked with several established names, including Jamil Sheriff, Al Wood and Tom Sharp’s Jazz Orchestra. For her Lit & Phil debut, Sophie will be accompanied by the Dean Stockdale Trio.
