Friday 11th April | 1pm

Mark Carroll, (harpsichord/piano) and Paul Taylor, (harpsichord/piano)

As composers and performers both have a long history at the Lit and Phil and this offers a rare opportunity to see them as a improvising duo.

Dr. Mark Carroll

is a composer, cellist, pianist, and teacher. Mark is an influential teacher and
active player in the North East, with over a decade of lecturing at levels 1 to 3 in subjects
such as composition, orchestration, and performance practice (at Durham University).
Mark’s PhD research (and subsequent composition/performance research) focused on the
question of composing Surrealist music, covering such historically-related factors as Freud,
Jung, Satie, Antheil, and Christou, as well as the broad field of theatricality in contemporary
music.

Paul Taylor

Paul Taylor is an accomplished pianist and keyboard player specializing in improvisation. The music is evocative, alluring and unique; combining unusual harmonies and sonorities with an original and fluid technique.

“Pauls solo excursions on piano proceed with an unpredictable but constantly gripping logic that often feels as close to the richly lyrical and harmonic approach of Romantic period classical composers as it does to jazz“: Paul Bream’

“Gorgeous“: The Guardian
