Gail-Nina Anderson Lecture: Edgar Allan Poe

In 1897 at the Lit and Phil Major Jones – at one point the American Consul in Newcastle – delivered a talk on fellow American Edgar Allan Poe, whose poems and short stories had already earned international fame. The decade was important, for as well as influencing such writers as Wilde and Rossetti, Poe’s consciously mannered prose and the verbal arabesques and archaisms of his poetry foreshadowed the Decadent literature of the 1890s.This illustrated lecture will look at his short life and enduring reputation as a master of Gothic style, macabre invention and mystery, including the visual inspiration of his work upon illustrators and film-makers.
