Material Mythologies: How Myth, Identity, and Material Culture Worked in Hellenistic Greece (323-150 BC)

Myth in Ancient Greece was infinitely flexible, with communities only miles apart holding onto contradicting versions of the same story. However, this was rarely questioned by either party. Why was this? The answer is in the material culture. It worked in tandem with myth and identity to lend reconcile competing variations of myth, lend authority to new legends, and facilitate intercultural communication between different societies. By understanding the relationship between the myth, identity, and material culture, we can rethink how culture and society worked in the ancient world.
