Classics Association Lecture | Creating the world of Alexander the Great’s Successors
Events List
Tuesday 12th November | 6pm
Lecture in association with the Northumberland and Durham branch of the Classical Association
John Holton, Newcastle University
What happened to Alexander the Great’s enormous empire, stretching from the Balkans to northwest India, after his death in 323 BC? And how did his Successors – generals and friends who had conquered that empire with him – create a new political reality? This talk explores how Alexander’s conquests catalysed the beginnings of the phenomenon of Hellenistic kingship, a distinctive model for autocratic rule developed by the Successors that was influential across global antiquity and beyond.
