The Children's Library
We have a special place at the Lit & Phil that is just for children, ready to feed their imaginations and allow them to travel off to amazing and magical worlds. Here they'll find a treasure trove of books full of classics and modern bestsellers to escape into, a comfortable place to sit, and a even an area for colouring and craft! (All while Mum and Dad relax with a book or even some refreshments!)
The children's library was started in 1914 and we've been adding books to it for over 100 years, so we have an exceptional collection full of literary classics and favourites. Mum and Dad and Granny and Grandad will all find books they used to read here too!
Our staff are on hand to help guide choices and to even take requests for any books you'd like to see in the collection!
You'll find books by all the current bestselling authors: Malorie Blackman, Julia Donaldson, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson, Philip Pullman, David Almond (a Lit & Phil regular!), Jeff Kinney, JK Rowling, Lemony Snickett and Suzanne Collins. We also have lots of non-fiction, including encyclopedias, books on the world, science and wildlife - great for homework, and a complementary collection of children's music and books on cd too.
All free to explore and browse and stay as long as you like!
We have regular children's events so check out our Whats On calendar for all details. Recent events have included Hearthside Tales set to music, creative writing for children and theatrical performance from the November Club.
(Oh, and did we say...? You can buy drinks, cakes and biscuits too!)
