Assyria in Newcastle: William Kennett Loftus and the Lit & Phil
Lecture by Stefania Ermidoro
This lecture will explore the figure of William Kennett Loftus (1820 - 1858), with a particular focus on five Assyrian marble reliefs that he donated to the Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle upon Tyne – the city where he grew up and from which his family originated.
The reliefs were displayed on the Society staircase for a century, during which a few members of the institution enjoyed a lively exchange of communications with Assyriologists and Keepers of the Oriental Collections at the British Museum in London. Previously unpublished archival documents currently kept at the Lit & Phil attest to such exchange and shed light on the intellectual liveliness of the Society’s members during the second half of the 19th century.
As a member you can borrow most books published after 1850 (but not all at once). You can also access wi-fi in the Library and benefit from priority booking at some events. By joining the Lit & Phil, you are also supporting this wonderful institution, so thank you!
Check if we have that book you've been looking for. You don't need to be a member to search the catalogue; search by title, author, keyword or subject. Members can then reserve the book to collect later.
