When the shocking news of the Peterloo Massacre reached Tyneside in August 1819 local radicals began to organise a protest demonstration. They negotiated with an unwilling Mayor to hold a meeting on 10th October. This took place as planned - the numbers shocking the organisers as well as the authorities. Tens of thousands turned out on their day marching many miles from their localities. It may still be the largest demonstration ever held on Tyneside.
