Paul Taylor + Archipelago £8/6

Paul Taylor is an accomplished pianist and keyboard player specialising in improvisation. The music is evocative, alluring and unique; combining unusual harmonies and sonorities with an original and fluid technique.

He is emerging as one of the most consistently interesting and innovative solo pianists in recent years, eschewing the conventional cliches associated with jazz improvisation in favour of an unorthodox, harmonically complex and often compellingly beautiful musical language that is often inspired by the classical tradition. Nonetheless, his playing also encapsulates the restless capacity for invention that is a cornerstone of jazz.

Paul Taylor is a northern line R6 ambassador artist supported by Jazz North using public funding from Arts Council England.

Recent performances have included Manchester Jazz Festival, Marsden Jazz Festival, Transilvania Jazz Festival in Romania and Roland Jazz Festival, also in Romania.

"A rare phenomenon": International Piano Magazine, Nov/Dec 2016 edition
"A solo improviser of outstanding scope and originality": Paul Bream's Jazz Alert
"Gorgeous": The Guardian

Archipelago are an award winning Tyneside trio, playing original, genre crossing music. They fuse jazz, alt-rock and free improvisation to name a few, taking inspiration from musicians as diverse as Don Cherry, Morphine and Joni Mitchell.

Since releasing their debut LP ‘Weightless’ in 2017, Archipelago have had national airplay (Late Junction, Jazz on 3), received a prestigious 'Peter Whittingham Development Award’ from Help Musicians UK and played up and down the country sharing bills with Binker & Moses, Arun Ghosh and Field Music.

In 2018, with the support of Help Musicians UK and Cobalt Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne, they ran ‘BETWEEN WAVES’, a collaborative residency-gig series for female-identifying artists to make new music with Archipelago.
