Newcastle has been an important centre for the delivery of health services for more than 250 years and its two infirmaries have played a major role in the city's medical history, treating thousands of patients and helping to train many physicians and surgeons.
This lecture throws the spotlight on the history of the old Newcastle Infirmary, founded in the 18th Century, which pioneered antiseptic technique in the city, and its successor, the Royal Victoria Infirmary, opened in 1906, one of Britain's greatest regional hospitals.
