Collingwood in a storm: the Weather of the Battle of Trafalgar, October 1805 £1

The Battle of Trafalgar is best recalled for the magnitude, nature and consequences of the victory and, of course, the death of Nelson. Less widely appreciated is the character of the storm that set in on the evening of 21st October and then raged for a week and was, according to contemporary sources, a greater challenge to the shattered English fleet than the battle itself! This presentation reviews the weather of the battle and the subsequent storm but also draws attention to the importance of local man Cuthbert Collingwood who took command of the fleet on the death of his friend Horatio Nelson.
