Nature in Translation: Colonial Naturalists and the rise of British Zoology in the Early-Nineteenth Century.
The naturalists who worked on the margins of Britain’s empire are the unsung heroes of nineteenth-century British science. In this lecture, we will see how their efforts in collecting tens of thousands of zoological specimens, drawings, and descriptions, often in the harshest of environments, contributed decisively to a seismic shift in how man views the natural world and his place within it.
