Visit The Lit & Phil
The Lit & Phil is a public building, just pop in for coffee or immerse yourself in books and history.
You may have heard someone mention the Lit & Phil, or maybe a friend of yours likes us on Facebook. But have you ever been inside? It’s the only way to understand how special it is.
The Lit & Phil is a public building and everyone is welcome to use it. Don't be put off by the slightly austere facade and imposing entrance hall. Come up the stairs and into the library. The staff are welcoming and first-time visitors are always impressed.
Have a look around, or join one of the FREE guided tours on the first Saturday and third Wednesday of the month, at 10.30am. Additionally, there is usually a volunteer in the library, ready to answer your questions or to show you around.
Everyone’s welcome, please sign the Visitors' Book and tell us what you think.
If you’re looking for a particular book, you can check the on-line catalogue or call and ask before you come in.
If you would like to come in for an event, check what’s on and reserve a place.

As a member you can borrow most books published after 1850 (but not all at once). You can also access wi-fi in the Library and benefit from priority booking at some events. By joining the Lit & Phil, you are also supporting this wonderful institution, so thank you!
Check if we have that book you've been looking for. You don't need to be a member to search the catalogue; search by title, author, keyword or subject. Members can then reserve the book to collect later.
