Hire The Lit & Phil
Truly unique and perfectly situated next to Newcastle's Central Station
Historically, meetings at the Lit & Phil have been very productive. One in 1880 saw the building become the first in the world to be lit by electric light (by Joseph Swan). Members also witnessed George Stephenson’s first public demonstration of the Miners’ Safety Lamp in 1815.
It’s a fabulous and inspirational space, the perfect place for collaborating, learning, talking, negotiating, listening and doing.
The Main Library is perfect when you really want to impress, and can hold up to 150 people for a non-seated event. For a more formal lecture, choose from the Loftus or Lecture Rooms, where 95 can be seated comfortably. The prestigious Committee Room is where the Board of Trustees meet each month, and have done since 1825.
Room hire starts from only £20 per hour.

As a member you can borrow most books published after 1850 (but not all at once). You can also access wi-fi in the Library and benefit from priority booking at some events. By joining the Lit & Phil, you are also supporting this wonderful institution, so thank you!
Check if we have that book you've been looking for. You don't need to be a member to search the catalogue; search by title, author, keyword or subject. Members can then reserve the book to collect later.
